Should I publish my book with a publisher?
Will a book publishing company be worth the investment?
YES and NO. It depends on:
1. their customer reviews;
2. what you are able or willing to do yourself to publish your book(s);
3. whether their services are spelled out and match your expectations;
4. your budget;
5. whether or not you are looking for top marketing, as some small publishers charge you but have minimal marketing;
6. how much control you wish to have over the publishing process (such as editing, design, using their logo, book pricing, distribution markets…);
7. your willingness to relinquish a percentage of profits in royalties;
8. the timing to complete your project. Most publishers’ timelines are at least 8 months;
9. your comfort level of paying for services upfront;
10. your confidence in the publisher’s ability and resources to effectively publish and market your book;
11. your familiarity with the publisher’s reputation and type of books they carry;
12. your understanding that they do not guarantee your path to success, nor does their logo.
Self-publishing authors seek out their own editors, cover designers, and graphic designers specializing in book design. Most will not require full payment up front. Added altogether, if you are on a budget, going this route is more affordable, plus you keep the royalties, and have decision making power with each professional.
These professionals know all the ins and outs of publishing and as independents, are happy to give guidance and referrals. They can also give referrals for book marketing companies, or you can search Google for nearly infinite ways to market yourself (most of what the publishers do is coach you on how to do it).
